Adopt  A Highway

The idea for adopting a road or highway came from a brainstorming session during one of Earthontheedge.org’s board meetings. We were discussing possible ways to raise visibility of our nonprofit and ways to directly impact our local community. Originally the idea was to adopt a section of highway with the State of Oregon. This idea proved difficult to achieve, due mostly to pandemic related issues. In late February 2022, earthontheedge.org received a call from Clackamas County adopt-a-road program offering us an opportunity.
Where?
The photo with Mount Hood (on the left) shows two colored lines. The yellow line shows about half and Sheri the total distance of one side of the road. The blue line shows the areas with volunteer assistance.

Project Details
This opportunity was to adopt a 2.5 mile stretch of Jennifer Street. Due to a large demand for adopt-a-road equipment in the springtime, it was decided the project would take place from 3-4-2022 to 3-14-2022. This was to avoid scheduling conflicts with the many other groups doing springtime cleanups. Because of the short notice and not much time for planning the project was completed by me, (Monte Harris) and a small group of dedicated volunteers. In total we picked up 18 large bags of garbage. The inaugural event went smoothly, and with the right planning and some enthusiastic environmentalists, the second time around will be an even more awesome event.

Special Thanks

Special thanks go out to Sean and Shari Hathaway owners of the Happy Valley Mattress World. Sean was passing by and stopped to help on Saturday March 5th and he and his wife showed up with coffee and donuts on Sunday March 6th to help for a couple of hours. It is so awesome and amazing to get unexpected help from community business owners who want to get involved.
